How to Reduce Hydrogen Peroxide in the Body: Boosting Natural Defenses

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a natural byproduct of cellular metabolism, but when antioxidant defenses falter, its accumulation leads to oxidative stress, cellular damage, and accelerated aging.
## The Normal Role of H2O2
In healthy cells, hydrogen peroxide serves as a signaling molecule for immune responses, cell differentiation, and wound healing. Problems arise when production exceeds neutralization capacity.
## The Antioxidant Defense System
The body employs several enzyme systems: catalase converts H2O2 into water and oxygen, glutathione peroxidase neutralizes it using selenium and glutathione, and peroxiredoxins provide fine-tuned cellular redox control.
## Supporting Catalase Production
Catalase activity increases with regular aerobic exercise, adequate zinc and iron intake, and consumption of catalase precursor-rich foods. Sweet potatoes, liver, spinach, and beef provide the minerals needed for catalase synthesis.

## Exercise Paradox
Acute exercise temporarily increases reactive oxygen species, but regular training upregulates antioxidant enzyme expression. This hormetic response makes consistent exercisers better equipped to handle oxidative stress.
